Pre-Primary
Our Pre-Primary program is specially designed for children ages 2 to 3 — a time of incredible cognitive, emotional, and physical development. In this thoughtfully prepared environment, toddlers are given space to explore, build independence, and develop early social, language, and motor skills in a setting that nurtures their natural curiosity and sense of wonder.
Supporting Independence in the Youngest Learners
Our pre-primary classroom meets the unique developmental needs of toddlers, with materials scaled to their size and interests. Children are invited to explore at their own pace, make independent choices, and participate in daily routines that help build confidence, order, and autonomy. Each child is supported by trained Montessori guides who honor their readiness and developmental rhythms.
A Rich Environment for Early Growth
Our Pre-Primary program provides experiences that support whole-child development during these formative years:

-
Language Development: Ages 2 to 3 are peak years for language acquisition. Rich vocabulary, storytelling, song, and verbal engagement create an environment that supports both expressive and receptive language growth.
-
Motor Skills: Purposeful activities such as pouring, spooning, threading, and buttoning refine both fine and gross motor coordination while promoting concentration and control.
-
Practical Life: Children practice essential self-care routines like dressing, hand washing, and caring for their environment, laying the groundwork for independence and responsibility.
-
Social and Emotional Development: In a calm, age-specific community, children feel secure and connected. Through parallel and cooperative play, they begin to develop empathy, trust, and early friendship skills.
-
Toileting Readiness: As part of our respectful and child-centered approach, toileting is introduced as a natural, self-directed process. Children are invited to participate in dressing, undressing, and using the potty chair as they become ready, helping them develop confidence and body awareness. For families seeking additional guidance, we recommend Toilet Awareness by Sarah Moudry.
A Gentle Bridge to the Primary Program
The Pre-Primary classroom gently prepares children for the broader Montessori experience. As toddlers grow in independence, focus, and self-help skills, they become ready to transition to our Primary program with confidence and ease. This early foundation supports future academic and social success, while honoring each child’s unique pace of development.
At Montessori School of Franklin, learning begins with joy, respect, and a deep understanding of the child. The Pre-Primary program is the first step in a journey that nurtures not only knowledge but also the confidence and curiosity to pursue it.
