Reading Readiness
Discover how the Montessori School of Franklin’s Reading Readiness Program, guided by the revolutionary Scarborough Reading Rope model, intertwines essential skills to create proficient readers. Through a multi-sensory, systematic approach, we support each student as they master this crucial lifetime skill.
Weaving a Strong Foundation:
The MSF Reading Readiness Program
The MSF Reading Readiness Program is based on the Science of Reading and uses the Hollis Scarborough Reading Rope model as its guide for instruction. Created by Dr. Hollis Scarborough in the 1990s, the model is based on the idea that reading proficiency is the result of many interconnected and interdependent strands of learning. As seen below, the Scarborough Reading Rope is a visual representation of the 8 skills needed to become a proficient reader. Each skill is represented as a single strand of the rope; it is the weaving together of these skills/strands that results in skilled reading.

While a Montessori curriculum is inherently strong at developing many of the skills necessary for reading, at MSF your child will receive additional instruction from a literacy certified teacher. Using Montessori materials, the Reading Readiness teacher works to strengthen the individual skills/strands of the reading rope and puts additional focus on weaving all the strands together to make a strong and skilled reader. This instruction will be multi-sensory, systematic, and explicit, and done in close collaboration with your child’s classroom teacher.
Reading is one of the most important skills your child will learn during their lifetime. At MSF, we realize this fact and are committed to ensuring that each MSF student has the maximum opportunity to master this important skill.
